Thanks to five-year program
In the HBP, as course subjects, students do overseas laboratory rotations and overseas internships of two or more months, and while working on these subjects, they are often away from their laboratories for a long time. I understand that this was made possible thanks to the consistency of the five-year program. For example, it would not be easy for students in the master’s degree program to go overseas for a few months. If students choose to do something other than their research activities for a few months, they would find it difficult to plan their two-year studies. Moreover, for students who move to another university for a doctoral degree program, the first jump start is critical. It means that they cannot go away at the beginning of their second year in the doctoral degree program when they are about to obtain research results. They also need to think about preparing their mid-term report and about their paper submission upon returning to their laboratories, in addition to looking for a job. However, students in the five-year program can plan their schedule differently. In fact, I feel that the HBP students improve their planning skills as they move up through the grades.
Advice from senior students
[ 5 year doctoral program ]
It is pointed out that the effort of preparing master's thesis which is the requirement for the doctoral course is excessive for students aiming a Ph.D. degree. Carefully considering that master's thesis played a major role as a training to be a researcher, it was necessary to design a new program to maximize the merits of 5 year education.
HBP realizes a student development program that makes the best use of the five years by developing subject specific classes and basic practical classes in the 1st and the 2nd year and the cross-disciplinary curriculums and the advanced long-term practical classes from the second half of the 2nd year on top of doctoral research activities.
How to accomplish more
My philosophy includes continuous learning and improvement. If there is an opportunity, I will grab it. I am enthusiastic to challenge myself with as many diverse activities as possible. My aim is to go beyond expectations. For example, in the HBP, we must complete 72 credits and have two paper publications; however, I always think of strategies how to accomplish more than just these requirements.
I am inspired to make the most of my time because of my strong sense of gratitude for HBP. The program provides financial support and several career opportunities. The Japanese government has invested so much in us and in return, I dedicate 100% of my time and energy to become a “Global Leader”.
I am enjoying the diversity of HBP activities such as doing research in the laboratory, developing appropriate technologies, entrepreneurship training, and even extracurricular activities like business competitions. Every project is an opportunity to improve myself and expand my network. Also, I am feeling a sense of satisfaction by recalling my accomplishments, such as having presented my work more often and having received more awards than the previous year.
If I persevere, I will be able to enjoy a bountiful harvest. Keeping this mindset, I would like to continue challenging myself to strive for excellence. This will surely make my five years of HBP life well-spent.

[ Global Oversea Training ]
The University of Tsukuba originated "Knight-Errantry Training Program" that train students with practical education outside the university. However, it was necessary to further evolve this training program to develop students who can deal with global-scale problems.
HBP newly came up with challenging courses where students visit developing countries and developed regions with severe social issues and proactively tackle on the issues students find themselves to foster the ability of management and strategic planning also related to entrepreneurial skills.
